THANK YOU to Mary Phelps Jacob, who sold her invention under the name of Caresse Crosby. It was designed to substitute the wearing of heavily structured corsets that had braces of metal between folds of fabric. Her design was the first brassiere to enjoy widespread use, but its popularity did not peak until World War I, when the U.S. government requested that women stop purchasing corsets in order to conserve metal. Whew!
