The original didn’t have an eraser attached but, thanks to Nicolas Jacques Conte - French painter, balloonist, army officer and inventor of the modern pencil - we can get our ideas down on paper. He received the patent for his design (pressed graphite and clay sandwiched between two pieces of wood) in 1795.
