Before ships were made of metal, they were made of wood. In the event of catastrophe, seamen (and women) had a chance of survival by holding onto wood from the vessel. Sinking metal parts changed that. THANK YOU to Captain Ward, Royal National Lifeboat Institution inspector, for developing the life vest. By the way, the first vests were made of cork!!
